Off Script – Design Thinking for Student-Driven Learning

DESIGN THINKING for STUDENT-DRIVEN LEARNING
October 19 + 20, 2017  |  TUCSON, AZ  |  Registration  |  Agenda
Why Design Thinking? Because it’s creative problem solving rooted in empathy + experiential learning.

The design process merges creativity, collaboration, analytical reasoning, and systems thinking to engage teams in inquiry-based exploration and learning. At Off Script – Design Thinking for Student-Driven Learning, you will use the design process to establish a framework for a student-driven project or assignment. By the end of the two-day, retreat you will have gained hands-on experience with design thinking tools and created a prototype to implement design thinking in your school or classroom.

Agenda

Thursday, October 19

8:00 – Breakfast from Cartel Coffee Lab – Delicious!

8:30 – Creating Innovators not Innovations A short introduction to the basic process of design thinking (empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test) and why it’s a useful tool for student-driven learning.

9:00 – Start Where You Are – Finding new approaches to address itchy problems is a fundamental objective of design thinking…and the best place to start is by asking questions. Learn to define and tackle tough problems with strategies from appreciative inquiry and participatory design.

10:00 – Morning Break

10:15 – Empathy + Respect — Design thinking starts with empathy, but it takes more than “perspective taking” to work together toward new approaches and solutions. Respect and appreciation for difference are essential components of participatory design. Discover activities that can promote respect through empathy and inquiry.

11:30 – Me Time

12:00 – Lunch – Fun, delicious, and surprising!

1:00 – Who Are You? –  The traditional methodology for problem solving assumes that the designer has all the answers. Well, think again. To create feasible, viable, and desirable solutions, you’ve got to listen to what people need. Develop tools and strategies for deep listening and observation.

2:30 – Afternoon Break

2:45 – How DO You Define Success? We all have different definitions of success, different wants and needs. Use empirical learning to help you find the right angle. Practice focusing your aim and avoid assumptions through activities for collaborative learning and decision-making.

3:45 – Me Time

4:30 – I like, I wish, What if…? – Feedback loops allow you to monitor and adjust. Explore tools to share feedback in lean & effective ways.

5:00 – Happy Hour – YUM!

Friday, October 20

8:30 – Breakfast  Cartel Coffee Lab

9:00 – Ideate! – It’s a fancy word for “come up with ideas.” Learn to harness the power of ideation by scaffolding the process and building creative confidence by stretching beyond the typical and the obvious.

10:30 – Morning Break

10:45 – Make it. Share it. The best ideas aren’t any good if other people can’t conceptualize them. Take ideas from concept to reality by creating prototypes. Try your hand at prototyping and discover new angles you hadn’t seen.

11:30 – Prototype Party! Practice receiving and giving feedback in lean and helpful ways. (Yes, again. That’s what practice is all about!)

12:00 – Lunch – Fun, delicious, and surprising!

1:00 – The Testing Dilemma – You never know if something will work if you don’t try it, but this is too often where we get stuck. There’s always a million reasons not to try something. Work to create a way to test everything you’ve worked on. Design a test through a series of tried and true activities + personal work time.

3:30 – Show & Tell! – It’s time for listening and learning from each other.

4:15 – Wrap up…
